WAT PHNOM BANAN

Phnom Banan is a remarkable historical and cultural destination in Battambang Province, combining an ancient Khmer temple, natural landscapes, and local spiritual traditions. Perched on a 75-metre-high natural hill, Banan Temple features five temple towers, with a central tower symbolizing Mount Meru, surrounded by four towers representing the four cardinal directions. The site reflects architectural influences spanning from the 9th to the late 13th centuries, including important developments during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. Today, Phnom Banan offers visitors a fascinating journey through ancient Khmer heritage, local legends, spirituality, and the peaceful countryside of Battambang.

SPIRITUAL

Wat Phnom Banan

  • Phnom Banan carries deep historical, religious, and spiritual significance. Its five temple towers are traditionally understood as a representation of Mount Meru and the four directions, reflecting the sacred cosmology of ancient Khmer architecture.

Two important inscriptions discovered at the site provide valuable evidence of its long religious history. An inscription dated 1050 CE records the temple’s significance during the reign of King Udayadityavarman II, while another inscription dated 1287 CE describes the site as a place for religious retreat and the promotion of Buddhism.

For generations, local communities have also maintained spiritual traditions connected with Phnom Banan. People continue to visit the site to pray for happiness, rainfall, successful harvests, and protection from illness, keeping a living connection between the ancient sanctuary, local beliefs, and community life.
