Meaning of Lakon Yi Ke Dance

LAKON YI KE

Lakhon Yike is one of Cambodia’s distinctive traditional musical theatre forms, centered around singing, dancing, and the rhythmic beats of the Yike drum as its core elements. It is an integral part of the soul of Khmer culture, preserved and promoted throughout generations since ancient times.

Origin & Story

Lakon Yi Ke

  • Lakon Yike is a traditional Khmer theatrical art form that combines mimetic movements, dance, singing, music, and spoken narration. It places strong emphasis on the rhythms of the Skor Yike , accompanied by singing and dancing, creating a lively performance that engages and captivates the audience.

  •
  • Yike has been performed for Cambodian kings, members of the Royal Family, and distinguished guests. During the reign of King Norodom, more modern stage designs were introduced, blending with traditional stage decoration. These included painted backdrops depicting forests, mountains, skies, and clouds, along with the use of stage lighting. Over time, Yike stage design has continued to evolve.

Costumes, Music, and Traditions

Traditional Costume & Adornment

  • Today, performances feature a variety of painted backdrops and colorful lighting, enhancing the visual appeal and atmosphere of the performance and engaging audiences. Originally, Yike performers sat in a circle. When it was their turn to perform, the respective performer would stand up and perform before returning to their original place after completing their part.

At that time, the audience sat around the performers and watched the performance from all sides.Today, Yike theatre faces challenges brought about by globalization and the rapid advancement of modern technology. In particular, young people now have access to new forms of entertainment through smartphones and digital technology, contributing to a decline in interest in and support for Yike theatre.

Yike can be experienced at cultural events and arts festivals across Cambodia, as well as through special performances by traditional theatre troupes. In Phnom Penh, Yike is also presented as part of traditional arts programmes at cultural and performing arts venues.
