KOH KER OR PRASAT PRANG

Koh Ker or Prasat Prang

ORIGIN AND STORY

Koh Ker is a remarkable mountain-temple complex in northern Cambodia. Its striking pyramid structure can almost seem more reminiscent of ancient Mesoamerican temples than the traditional image of Khmer architecture. At its heart stands the magnificent seven-tiered pyramid of Prasat Thom, rising dramatically above the surrounding forest. Once the center of a short-lived but brilliant royal capital, Koh Ker was abandoned for centuries, allowing the forest to slowly reclaim its ancient stones. In the 10th century, King Jayavarman IV moved the heart of the Khmer Empire away from Angkor and established his new capital at Koh Ker. His ambitious building program created more than 180 structures, transforming the remote landscape into a monumental royal and religious center.
Today, visitors can climb the great pyramid, wander among ancient sanctuaries hidden in the forest, and encounter the remarkable story of a king, his extraordinary vision, and a capital that flourished for only a brief chapter in Khmer history. In 928 CE, King Jayavarman IV made a bold decision to break away from the traditional center of power at Yasodharapura and establish a new capital at Chok Gargyar, now known as Koh Ker. At the heart of his city stood Prasat Thom, crowned by a spectacular seven-tiered pyramid rising approximately 36 metres high. The city was conceived on a grand scale, with a vast reservoir and numerous temples dedicated to Hindu beliefs. The capital flourished under Jayavarman IV, leaving behind a remarkable architectural legacy that reflected the power, ambition, and religious devotion of the Khmer Empire. After the king's death in 944 CE, the royal center returned to the Angkor region. Koh Ker was gradually abandoned, and over the following centuries, the surrounding forest slowly reclaimed the ancient city. Today, improved roads and extensive demining efforts have made the main archaeological area accessible to visitors. Its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 17 September 2023 further recognized Koh Ker's outstanding architectural character and its importance in the history of Khmer civilization.
