Phnom Kulen is one of Cambodia’s most significant national parks, located in the northeastern part of Siem Reap Province, approximately 40 kilometers from Siem Reap city. The area is renowned for its unique combination of nature, history, culture, and spirituality. Phnom Kulen is not only home to beautiful mountain forests, waterfalls, and natural streams, but is also deeply connected to the early history of the Khmer Empire. It was here that King Jayavarman II is traditionally associated with the declaration of independence from Java in 802 CE and the establishment of the early Devaraja tradition, as recorded in the Sdok Kak Thom inscription. Known in ancient times as Mahendraparvata, Phnom Kulen was once an important early royal center of the Khmer Empire. Archaeological research has revealed the remains of an ancient city, roads, canals, and numerous temples hidden within the forest. These discoveries provide important evidence of the development and sophistication of Khmer society during the pre-Angkorian period. Surrounded by rich natural forests, Phnom Kulen is home to waterfalls, streams, small rivers, sandstone cliffs, and diverse wildlife.
Visitors can explore the sacred and natural beauty of Phnom Kulen, where lush mountain forests, ancient heritage, and spiritual traditions come together in remarkable harmony. Visitors can relax and swim at Phnom Kulen Waterfall, hike through peaceful forest trails, and discover beautiful mountain landscapes. They can also visit the remarkable River of a Thousand Lingas, where ancient carvings of lingas, yonis, and sacred figures can be seen along the riverbed, and pay their respects at Preah Ang Thom, home to a magnificent reclining Buddha carved from sandstone.
