WAT SAMPOV PRAM

Sampov Pram Pagoda is a small and distinctive Buddhist sanctuary located on the summit of Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province. Built in 1924 during the reign of King Sisowath Monivong, the pagoda was established alongside the development of Bokor as a mountain retreat. Its name, meaning “Five Boats,” is inspired by five large natural rock formations near the pagoda that resemble the sails of five boats. Surrounded by misty mountain landscapes and remarkable stone formations, Sampov Pram offers a unique blend of Buddhist heritage, local legend, history, and nature.

  • The name Sampov Pram, meaning “Five Boats,” is closely associated with the five large rock formations beside the pagoda, whose shapes resemble five boats with raised sails. Local tradition later connected these formations with the well-known Khmer legend of Preah Thong and Neang Neak, in which five boats carried precious treasures as Preah Thong and Neang Neak returned from the naga realm.

  •

Historically, however, the pagoda itself dates to the early 20th century, rather than being an ancient temple. Its construction in 1924 reflects the importance of Buddhism during the development of Bokor as a mountain retreat. The small vihara, stupa, and surrounding structures also demonstrate the refined architectural craftsmanship of the period.

  •

Today, Sampov Pram represents an interesting meeting point between history, Buddhist tradition, Khmer folklore, architecture, and the natural landscape of Bokor Mountain.

Uncovering the Sacred Arts in Temples and Shrines

Wat Sampov pram

Visitors can explore the charming small vihara, built with stone and decorated with a traditional two-tiered tiled roof, ornate roof edges, and distinctive four-Chofa roof ornaments. Its modest scale and refined details offer a glimpse into Khmer Buddhist architecture of the early 20th century.

The most distinctive feature is the five enormous rock formations beside the pagoda. Their unusual shapes resemble the sails of boats and provide a striking natural backdrop for photography while helping visitors understand the origin of the name Sampov Pram.

Visitors can also learn about the local legend of Preah Thong and Neang Neak, one of Cambodia’s best-known traditional stories, and discover how folklore became connected with the landscape of Bokor.

Surrounded by the cool mountain climate, mist, forests, and dramatic rocky terrain, Sampov Pram offers a peaceful experience where visitors can appreciate Buddhist heritage, Khmer storytelling, historic architecture, and the natural beauty of Bokor.
