SAMBOR PREI KUK

Sambor Prei Kuk

ORIGIN AND STORY

Sambor Prei Kuk is an ancient temple complex hidden deep within a peaceful forest. Once known as Isanapura, it served as the capital of the Chenla Kingdom during the 7th century and stands as an important testament to the origins of Khmer culture and civilization. Unlike the grand monuments of Angkor, Sambor Prei Kuk offers a quieter and more intimate experience. Ancient brick sanctuaries stand among the trees, including distinctive octagonal towers that reveal the remarkable creativity of early Khmer architects. On 8 July 2017, Sambor Prei Kuk was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its outstanding cultural and historical significance. At the end of the 6th and beginning of the 7th centuries, the Chenla Kingdom rose to prominence, succeeding the earlier Funan Kingdom. Under the reign of King Isanavarman I, Isanapura became an important political and religious center.
The temples of Sambor Prei Kuk were primarily dedicated to Hinduism, particularly Shiva, and were developed with sophisticated architectural layouts, enclosure walls, water systems, and sacred spaces. The artistic and architectural tradition developed here became known as the Sambor Prei Kuk style. Its distinctive features include elaborate brick structures, beautifully decorated doorways, and a remarkable harmony between architecture and the surrounding natural landscape. The temples remain scattered throughout the tranquil forest, allowing visitors to experience the site on foot or by bicycle in a peaceful and immersive setting.
