Meaning of Apsara Dance

ROBAM APSARA

The Apsara dance is the classical ballet of Cambodia, functioning as living poetry where every delicate gesture, hand posture, and eye movement tells a profound story without words. It serves as a powerful symbol of grace and spirituality, representing the celestial nymphs of Hindu and Buddhist mythology who descended from heaven to earth to embody purity and the eternal soul of Khmer art.

Origin & Story

Robam Apsara

  • Robam Apsara is one of Cambodia’s most renowned Royal Ballet dances and an important symbol of Khmer culture. The dance is closely associated with the civilization of the Angkor period. On many ancient temple walls, particularly at Angkor Wat and Bayon Temple, numerous carvings of celestial Apsaras can be found, each depicted with different gestures, poses, and forms of adornment.

  •
  • For the Khmer people, Apsaras are regarded as celestial maidens who represent the act of seeking blessings and protection from deities or sacred beings. They are believed to bring blessings from the heavens, symbolizing prosperity, peace, happiness, and well-being for the people and the nation.

Costumes, Music, and Traditions

Traditional Costume & Adornment

The dancers wear crowns resembling those of Apsaras depicted in ancient Khmer art, along with necklaces, belts, bracelets, anklets, and numerous golden ornaments. The costumes are elaborately designed to express the dignity, elegance, and beauty of the characters.

The dancers’ hairstyles and makeup are also carefully arranged to suit their respective roles. At the same time, the performance is accompanied by traditional music in the “Dom Cheung” musical style. The melodies and the dancers’ movements are closely coordinated, creating a calm, graceful, and mystical atmosphere.

Traditionally performed during auspicious royal events, national coronations, and religious rituals to invoke blessings and peace for the Kingdom, the Apsara dance is now a centerpiece of major national festivities such as Khmer New Year. It is also featured in nightly theatrical performances designed to welcome international visitors experiencing the heart of Cambodia.
