Beng Mealea

ORIGIN AND STORY

Beng Mealea Temple is located approximately 60 kilometres northeast of Siem Reap, in Beng Mealea Village, Beng Mealea Commune, Svay Leu District, Siem Reap Province. Built in the early 12th century, Beng Mealea is a Hindu temple constructed in the distinctive Angkorian style. Its ground plan closely reflects the architectural layout of Angkor Wat, leading many scholars to associate the temple with King Suryavarman II. This striking resemblance has inspired an intriguing theory that Beng Mealea may have served as an early model or architectural experiment for the magnificent masterpiece that would become Angkor Wat.
With its vast scale, long galleries, intricate passageways, and monumental layout, Beng Mealea reflects the importance it once held during the Angkorian era. After the decline of the Khmer Empire, the temple was gradually abandoned and remained embraced by the surrounding forest for nearly 900 years. Unlike many major temples, Beng Mealea has undergone relatively limited restoration, allowing much of its raw and romantic character to remain. Today, visitors can experience a rare glimpse of an ancient temple where nature and architecture have become inseparable massive stones lie scattered among the ruins, while enormous tree roots weave through and overtake the ancient walls. ors. Its inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 17 September 2023 further recognized Koh Ker's outstanding architectural character and its importance in the history of Khmer civilization.
