PREAH VIHEAR TEMPLE

PREAH VIHEAR TEMPLE

ORIGIN AND STORY

Perched on the edge of a 525-meter-high mountain in the Dangrek Mountain Range, Preah Vihear Temple is a remarkable achievement of Khmer architecture. Its extraordinary design, layout, intricate decoration, and harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape make it one of Cambodia’s most spectacular ancient monuments. Stretching approximately 800 meters along a single sacred axis, the temple is connected by a series of pathways, stairways, and ceremonial structures. From below, Preah Vihear appears to defy gravity, ascending toward the sky while overlooking an endless expanse of green landscape. Built during the 12th century, Preah Vihear was dedicated to Shiva, one of the principal deities of Hinduism. Its unique architectural design develops progressively along a single axis, guiding visitors upward toward the main sanctuary.
This ceremonial journey symbolizes a passage from the human world toward the divine realm, marked by five magnificent gopuras monumental gateways that become increasingly impressive as visitors ascend the mountain. Preah Vihear has long stood at the center of a territorial dispute between Cambodia and Thailand. In 1962, the International Court of Justice ruled that the temple belonged to Cambodia, a decision reaffirmed in 2013. Today, Preah Vihear remains a powerful symbol of Cambodian sovereignty, national heritage, and pride. On 7 July 2008, the temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
